Substance misuse: Intervention for families prevents drug misuse

Its findings come after research from the UK Drug Policy Commission cast doubt on the effectiveness of preventive techniques in tackling drug use (p10). But parents involved in the Adfam initiative, Bouncing Back!, said it had helped them communicate with their children, and understand young people's experiences.

Bouncing Back! took place through six projects over 12 months and included the Boys2Men project for fathers and young people in north London, Barnardos's South Lakeland Family Support Service, and a drug awareness project at HMP Bullwood Hall for female prisoners.

The National Drug Prevention Development Team at the Department of Health funded the scheme, which cost more than 110,000, with the aim of finding out how to build capacity for drug and alcohol projects to work with young people and families.
