The National Practitioners' Forum will be run by the charity's substance misuse project Stars, based in Nottingham. It will bring together drug and alcohol treatment specialists and child professionals from social services, education and health who encounter affected children but often do not realise they are at risk, according to Stars project manager Sara Mayer.
Mayer said that due to a lack of awareness, only a small proportion of the 1.5 million children affected accessed services.
The project will promote good practice among those working with and setting up projects for affected children.
Mayer said: "Practitioners frequently lack good models because there is no training available for them around this issue, making it difficult to identify children at an early stage. This means that by the time they are identified, they have lots of problems and quite complex needs."
