SUBSTANCE MISUSE: Campaign pushes benefits of sport

1 min read

The charity has enlisted famous faces to help in the Sport Against Addiction campaign, including model Laura Bailey, a boxing enthusiast. At a dinner on 13 May, support from England rugby player Matt Dawson and former Olympic 400m runner Roger Black, among others, helped raise 80,000.

Professor John Strang, director of research for Action on Addiction, said: "More people are becoming addicted to drugs and drink. Roughly one in five of all 11 to 15-year-olds have taken drugs in the past year. The number of units of alcohol per week being drunk by young people has doubled since 1990."

Lesley King-Lewis, the char-ity's chief executive, added: "We want this campaign to engage young people and inspire them to start playing sport."
