SUBSTANCE MISUSE: Judge leads investigation into US-style drug courts

1 min read
A working group is looking at the possibility of running a new type of drug court designed to keep recovering addicts and their children together.

The group, which has just been convened under resident district judge Nicholas Crichton of the Inner London Families Court, will examine how a new project dealing with children and drug-addicted parents, trialled in California, could be adapted to work in Britain.

The California pilot, which claims an 80 per cent success rate, brings together a range of agencies to work with the court and parents - most often mothers - to assess individual needs.

Skilled workers assess each case and work with a judge to tailor a specific programme for each individual.

The parent reports to the court on a weekly basis and the frequency is reduced gradually. The process can last up to six months if the child in question is aged three or under, and up to a year for older children.
