David Strugnell, a multimedia technology and design student, designed the JellySnap website, which uses a walled garden approach to ensure site security. This means that a user can only see data that belongs to them or their friends and no one else can access it.
Unlike other networking sites, to become friends with someone on JellySnap users must know that person's email address.
Strugnell said: "JellySnap acts as a safer alternative for the younger generation and for children who want to socialise safely online."
