Stoke's new youth clubs prove a hit

Youth Work
Youth centres in Stoke-on-Trent have experienced a surge in interest over the past year following a recent programme of investment.

Six centres in the city have either been opened or renovated using a £3m government grant in recent years. A further four will be completed in 2010.

Councillor Ian Mitchell, cabinet member for children and young people's services at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: "Sessions at the Shelton Youth Centre used to get just 15 young people. Now there are upwards of 70 at a time, many coming from other parts of the city to use the facilities. Moorland Park has doubled its attendance, Meir has trebled and Berryhill has about 40 young people attending on a regular basis."

The money has also been used to fund the introduction of Uth Hoppa mobile youth buses, which deliver youth activities in areas where there are few facilities for young people.
