The NYA sponsored the Youth Work Award, which sought to recognise an initiative that has done the most to promote young people's personal development through informal education and participation, especially among disadvantaged or excluded groups.
Fiona Blacke, National Youth Agency chief executive, presented the award to Stoke-on-Trent City Council for Socca, Rocka, Hoppa - an initiative set up by the council's youth service that uses a fleet of mobile youth vehicles to target areas where there is a lack of things to do for young people, or where there have been problems with antisocial behaviour.
The vans deliver a range of activities and their introduction has had a significant impact on antisocial behaviour. Since being introduced in 2009 there has been a 32 per cent decrease across the city, with the most noticeable fall at weekends.
