Matthew is one of a growing number of young people who are participating in sport that has traditionally been regarded as exclusive, such as rowing, tennis and golf. He belongs to the Danson Youth Group in Bromley, southeast London, which has taken advantage of the London Youth Rowing scheme.
London Youth Rowing is a joint venture between London Youth and the Royal Albert Dock Trust at the London Regatta Centre. With 750,000 of funding over five years from hedge fund management company Man Group plc, the scheme aims to make rowing more accessible to inner-city young people and shake off the posh tag. This summer it organised three five-day programmes to introduce them to the sport.
