The money will be spent developing sites where young people can take part in sporting activities, with the aim of improving their health and encouraging social interaction. Gary Hoffman, a main board director at Barclays, said: "We believe sport can have a major impact on society in terms of health and positive social values."
The sites will include outdoor spaces ranging from football pitches to basketball courts and BMX tracks. Some money will be spent on sports training programmes and equipment, although what is available will vary between sites.
The bank is working with sport charity the Football Foundation, and regeneration body Groundwork on the initiative.
