Somerset defends plans to restrict youth clubs

1 min read Youth Work
Somerset County Council has hit back at claims it is creating a "lock-in" policy for youth clubs.

CYP Now revealed that the council was considering a policy that stated that all young people aged 11 to 13 must be at the youth centre all the time during the hours specified by the centre (6-12 November 2008).

But David Taylor, Somerset's director of children's services, said: "There will be no locking in or locking out."

However, he admitted that some young people may be advised not to attend if they cannot stick to the rules.

"Our intent is not to keep youngsters out, but if they disappear from the youth club we will contact the parents. If they can't abide by these rules then reluctantly we will be advising those youngsters that coming to the youth club is probably not the sensible thing to do," he said.
