A fierce debate has been raging on CYPNow's online forum over youth club charges. Many youth clubs already ask for admission fees in the region of 50p and further charges are applied for activities such as trips away.
John Bateman, chief executive of UK Youth, believes charging can be beneficial, giving young people ownership for the services on offer.
Others, particularly those working in areas of high deprivation, believe it is unethical to charge young people entry fees and it effectively bars those perhaps most in need of the service.
Consider asking young people what they think about charges. Is charging for entry to a youth club unethical? If charges are levied, what is a reasonable amount? What happens if a young person cannot afford a charge? Should they be admitted for free? Would this involve means testing and how would a youth club ensure an offer of financial assistance was made discreetly?
