Youth clubs should charge entry fees

I have been following the heated debate on the CYP Now online forums about whether or not young people should have to pay for entry to youth clubs with considerable interest.

I have undulated in my own view (and its application) over many years. But these days, when asked, I come down with an unequivocal "yes". And then I wriggle out of that rigid position with some caveats and qualifications.

My starting point, when I have been in favour, has been for two reasons. First, there is very little in this world that can run entirely on hot air. As I used to point out to young people, you don't get much change from a pound for a three-star table tennis ball. This illustrated quite crisply that the costs of even what young people often thought of as the most insignificant type of equipment could easily mount up quite quickly.
