Unison bids to stave off youth cuts and Tory outsource plans

Unison is gearing up to fight against cuts to local authority youth services and resist a drive towards more voluntary sector provision, as signalled by the Conservatives.

In a draft motion set to be put before members at its local government conference in June, the union will call for youth services to be put on a statutory footing, directly controlled by local authorities.

The body is also calling on other unions to join its fight against the outsourcing of youth services to voluntary sector organisations.

Gill Archer, Unison national officer for youth and community workers, told CYP Now that if the voluntary sector delivers all youth services, quality would decline.

She said: "We think a move to increasing voluntary sector provision could lead to pressure on standards and wages, ultimately affecting service quality.
