Worcestershire County Council sold off a run-down youth centre on a large plot of land to Sainsbury's in return for a brand-new club. Tim Burke investigates.

Worcestershire youth service operational manager Paul Finnemore is quick to squash any misconceptions. "This is not about a partnership to deliver youth work. It's about planning gain and it happens to be Sainsbury's that is stumping up the money."

He's sitting back on one of the sturdy but comfortable sofas in the relaxation area of the new St John's Youth Centre, just across the River Severn from the centre of Worcester.

Opening shortly before Christmas 2008, the colourful, spick and span centre was financed by the supermarket giant, which, as part of the conditions for taking over the large St John's site, was required to replace the council's sports centre and the dingy, out-of-the-way youth centre attached to it.
