Social Services: Staff told to pay back flight costs

Two senior social services staff will be told to pay back the costs of flying business class to New Zealand to recruit a dozen staff for children's services.

The pair, who extended their stay to include a holiday, will be asked to reimburse the difference in price between the total of 5,524 they spent and what economy class would have cost.

Hampshire County Council leader Ken Thornber initially approved the arrangements made by Felicity Hindson, the executive member for social care, and Steve Love, assistant director of social services.

A council spokeswoman said Thornber wasn't aware the pair had planned to extend their stay. Had the trip been solely for business purposes, they would have been entitled to business class travel because of the length of the journey.
