Centre set to pay trustees for services

1 min read Early Years
The voluntary sector's representative body has criticised a children's centre's plan to pay some trustees 5,000 each in a bid to improve services.

Five Children and Families Trust, a social enterprise based in the Speke area of Liverpool, is the only independent children's centre in the city. Ninety per cent of families there are registered with it. If their plan is approved by the Charity Commission next month, the trust said it will be the only small charity in England to have a board structure consisting of professional members paid to provide a service.

However, the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) insisted that charitable trusts should not pay trustees for their services because it could undermine public confidence in the voluntary sector. An NCVO spokeswoman said: "While we cannot comment on the details of this case, the NCVO strongly believes that the voluntary principle is an asset and is compatible with good administration and should be retained."
