Social Care: Residential care - Fewer children in secure homes

The number of children accommodated in secure children's homes in England and Wales has dropped by three per cent.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families figures for the yearending 31 March 2007 showed the number of secure children's homes, whichprovide placements for children within the youth justice system orthrough local authorities, had remained at 390, the same as in 2006.

The proportion of approved places which were occupied in the last yearhas dropped to 78 per cent, compared with 81 per cent in 2006.
