Social Care News: Secure accommodation - Use of homes falls tobelow capacity

Government figures have revealed a sharp drop in the use of secure children's homes.

In March 2006, 81 per cent of beds were in use, a fall from 91 per centin March 2005. The fall means secure homes are operating well belowcapacity.

Mary Graham, chair of the Secure Accommodation Network, said: "When theYouth Justice Board builds secure training centres they cut the numberof contracts to secure children's homes. This has pushed more intobecoming welfare only."
