Rise in children placed in secure homes

New figures show numbers of children held in secure children's homes has increased despite a Youth Justice Board (YJB) decision not to renew four contracts.

As a result of a decision taken by the YJB in March, contracts have not been renewed at Kyloe House Secure Children's Home in Northumberland, Sutton Place Safe Centre in Hull, Orchard Lodge Secure Unit in London and the Atkinson Unit in Exeter.

The move means there will be 28 less places in SCHs by March next year.

Despite the fall in places, figures released by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) show there has been an increase in SCH placements during the last 12 months.

A total of 290 children were accommodated in SCHs in England and Wales at 31 March this year compared to 280 the previous year.
