Secure children's home placements plummet

1 min read Social Care Youth Justice
The number of children placed in secure children's homes has fallen to its lowest ever level, thanks to a significant reduction in youth justice placements, new figures show.

Latest data from the Department for Education reveals the number of children accommodated in secure children's homes in England and Wales fell from 204 in March 2018 to 172 in March 2019, an annual reduction of 16 per cent.

Children are placed in secure homes by local authorities on welfare grounds and by the youth custody service due to offending behaviour.

The data shows the percentage of children and young people detained or sentenced and placed by the youth custody service decreased from 48 to 38 per cent of the total over the past year.

Meanwhile, the percentage of children placed by local authorities increased from 47 to 56 per cent over the same period.
