The warning coincided with the publication of the annual report of theSocial Services Inspectorate for Wales. The report reveals "significantvariability" in the performance of children's social services.
It says that numbers of looked-after children continues to be high andthat the use of high-cost external placements, which has inevitablebudget consequences, are a common feature in Wales.
Chief inspector Graham Williams told Children Now that improving theperformance of children's services must be given immediate priority.
"All local authorities need to look at how they are performing to makesure enough political and professional priority is being given to theseservices," he said. "Good management information systems need to beimplemented so local authorities are better able to analyse how they aredoing and make better performance management decisions."
