65% of young people leaving care aged 16 or over had at least one GCSE at grade A-G* or GNVQ (49 per cent in England)
16% of school-age children looked after continuously for 12 months missed at least 25 days of schooling (12 per cent in England)
81% of looked-after children were in foster placements or placed for adoption (81 per cent in England)
Steve Peddie, assistant director for organisational development and performance at Wigan council, said initiatives to improve the educational achievements of looked-after children included an incentive scheme for students in years 10 and 11.
