Social Care News: Scotland - Adoption support guide is launched

The Scottish Adoption Association has launched a new resource for professionals who support families caring for children with complex needs.

It is designed to help parents who are struggling to cope with parentingchildren who have experienced difficult, painful and damaging earlyexperiences.

"This is really a guidebook to help social workers teach families atherapeutic form of parenting. The basic principle of this approach isthat we pay attention to the trauma and losses that children haveexperienced and focus equally and intensively on the normaldevelopmental experiences that were missed," said Holly Van Guldden,co-author of the guide.

The resource pack contains a range of techniques that can be used tohelp children catch-up on what they have missed. It includes casestudies of families and children who have been helped by theapproach.
