Social Care News: Scotland - Adoption law set to be overhauled

The Scottish Executive has announced plans to reverse the decline in the number of children being adopted.

Unlike in England, where the number of adoptions has risen by nearly 40 per cent since 1999, in Scotland the number of adoptions has fallen from around 1,000 a year 20 years ago to around 400 a year now.

The overhaul of legislation includes plans to modernise adoption law and give better support to children and families.

There are also plans to speed up the handling of adoption cases in the courts and children's hearing system. The most contentious issue is whether to allow same-sex couples to adopt.
