The Department for Children, Schools and Families released figures giving a breakdown of an adopter's status last week.
The figures showed in the year ending 31 March 2007, 100 same sex couples adopted children and young people, while 290 single people adopted. During the same period married couples adopted 2,800 children and young people, while unmarried heterosexual couples adopted 140. David Holmes, chief executive of the British Association for Adoption & Fostering, said: "It's really important to show the range of people adopting."
This is the second year figures for the number of children who have been given a special guardianship order have been published. Adults who look after children under special guardianship orders are not legally their parents but care for the child and take on much of the responsibility of being their parents.
