Social Care News: Northern Ireland - Consultation must gather child views

A consultation on new care standards in Northern Ireland's children's homes and fostering agencies should take children's views into account, a charity has claimed.

Elaine McElduff, spokeswoman for Children in Northern Ireland, said the charity welcomed the consultation and wanted it to be inclusive of children and young people.

"We believe they have a very important contribution to make. We'd like it to be made as accessible to them as possible," she said. "It remains to be seen if this will actually happen."

Angela Smith, minister with responsibility for health, social services and public safety, said the draft standards would also cover services for children under 12.

Some 600 people, from service providers and service users to inspection staff, were involved in drawing up the draft standards.
