Social Care News: Looked-after children - Concern over care leaverservice flaws

1 min read
An investigation by the Commission for Social Care Inspection has highlighted serious flaws in councils' leaving care services.

Roger Morgan, children's rights director at the commission, said he was"seriously concerned" about a number of issues uncovered by his surveyof care leavers. The support young people leaving care received was"something of a lottery", with services showing big variability acrossthe country, he added.

The law states young people should receive a leaving care plan. Thisplan, drawn up in agreement with the care leaver and their socialworker, details how the young person will be supported after leavingcare. But a significant number of young people said they had not beengiven a say and did not know they could contribute to its content.

"The lack of awareness of leaving care plans and what they shouldcontain is devastating for many care leavers," said Morgan.
