Social Care News: Inspections - Social care 'torn apart' byreforms

The head of the Commission for Social Care Inspection has branded the Government's reform of children's services inspections as "piecemeal".

Denise Platt, the commission's chair, spoke out after the Governmentabandoned its plans to merge the five criminal justiceinspectorates.

The Government ditched the plans after the House of Lords rejected theproposal. Platt said the decision meant social care was now the onlysector where the inspectorate was being "torn apart".

"If the Government wants to go ahead with this, it should go for themore radical option of creating a children's inspectorate that includeshealth. What we currently have is a piecemeal approach," she said.

Commission staff who handle children's social care inspections will moveto Ofsted by 1 April next year, when the education watchdog takes onfull responsibility for children's services inspection.
