Inspection: Sector divided over plan to scrap CSCI for single inspection body

1 min read
Children's sector leaders are divided over plans to scrap the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) and set up a single inspectorate for children's services, announced as part of last week's Budget.

Chancellor Gordon Brown said children's services currently inspected by the commission would move to Ofsted by 2008, creating a single inspectorate for education, children's services and skills. The commission's adult services will merge with the Healthcare Commission.

Felicity Collier, chief executive of BAAF Adoption & Fostering, said: "I'm very concerned about the impact on children's services." She also said it would be important to keep children's welfare and social care high on the agenda, as Ofsted's focus was on education.

Ian Johnston, director of the British Association of Social Workers, described the proposals as "nonsense" and asked: "How can you justify these changes when the CSCI was only formed last April?"
