The Kinship Project aims to place children with suitable members of the extended family or family friends. The scheme has been made possible by a Neighbourhood Renewal grant of £142,500.
"The idea is to offer an alternative to statutory forms of care," commented a spokeswoman for the council. "The project aims to offer formal support to informal arrangements which already exist but are currently unsupported."
Under the Children Act 1989, if a child needs fostering the local authority must consult the immediate family first.
