Social Care News: Foster care - Another setback for carers' helpline

The national helpline for foster carers has been delayed again.

The Government had previously promised that the helpline, which will provide foster carers with an independent source of information and advice, would be up and running in January (Children Now, 8-14 December 2004).

The children's workforce strategy says the advice line will be launched in April.

But the Fostering Network, which has been awarded a three-year contract worth 978,000 to run the telephone service, told Children Now it planned to launch Fosterline "in the next couple of months".

It will be open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, except on bank holidays, and will be staffed by fostering experts. There will be postal and email addresses and an out-of-hours answer phone service.
