Social Care News: Domestic violence - Children at risk of beingoverlooked

1 min read
Children affected by domestic violence are at risk of being overlooked in the redesign of children's services, experts warned last week.

The warning coincides with the launch of guidance on improving theoutcomes for children affected by domestic violence.

The guidance is aimed at those commissioning children's services and wasdrawn up by the Local Government Association, the Association ofDirectors of Social Services (ADSS), Women's Aid and Cafcass.

It states that the "secrecy, fear and shame" associated with domesticviolence mean children affected by it risk being overlooked aschildren's services are reformed and outlines ways to stop thishappening.

"Commissioning guidance will not itself produce new resources, but itwill help commissioners assess shortfalls and determine prioritieswithin the context of the five outcomes for children," said MargaretMcGlade, director of social services at Derby City Council and ADSSspokeswoman on domestic violence.
