Domestic violence: Scheme makes families' homes secure

1 min read
An initiative to help families at risk of domestic violence live safely in their homes is just one project to come about due to the development of a multi-agency post based at a children's centre in Kent.

Rose Ellison, who was appointed Thanet domestic violence co-ordinator inFebruary 2005 and is based at Millmead Children's Centre, told ChildrenNow the post allowed her to bring different agencies together to tacklethe issue in a joined-up way.

"I have been able to work across boundaries and bring agenciestogether," she said.

One of the projects she has initiated is the Thanet Sanctuary Project, which will be launched this spring. The project will see local policecarry out safety checks and fit security equipment such as new locks inthe homes of domestic violence victims who fear further attack.

The work is funded by Thanet's housing department and came out ofconsultation with survivors of domestic abuse. One of the survivors'main concerns was being forced to leave their homes due to risk ofviolence.
