Social Care News: Council services - Hants approves radical restructure

Hampshire council has approved in their entirety plans for a radical restructuring of its children's services.

The department will be developed along the lines of children's services in New Zealand to make them more family centred (Children Now, 2-8 June).

The five-point plan comprises: a pilot of a round-the-clock countywide call centre; expanding the use of family group conferences; seeking voluntary-sector partners to expand the county's current mentoring scheme; developing research through links with university child care research teams in New Zealand; and establishing an exchange programme for Hampshire and New Zealand social care staff.

Steve Love, assistant director of social services, said New Zealand was a "world leader" in working with families.
