Social Care News: Adoption - Catholic agencies in consortium plan

Catholic adoption agencies could form consortiums with non-religious agencies in order to comply with anti-discrimination laws, the Prime Minister has suggested.

Tony Blair told a meeting of Parliament's Liaison Committee that hehoped agencies would join together to provide a gateway for potentialadoptive parents to access adoption services.

Two weeks ago, Blair announced there would be no opt-out for Catholicadoption agencies in laws giving same-sex couples an equal right toadopt, but that there would be a 21-month period for the agencies toprepare for the new laws.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, the head of the Catholic Church inEngland, had warned that Catholic agencies would be shut down if the lawwent ahead.

A spokesman for the Catholic Church said it was not commenting on theoption of consortiums at this stage.
