Child protection: Catholic Church to review procedures

The Catholic Church is to review its child protection procedures.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor has asked Baroness Julia Cumberlege tochair a commission of experts to review progress since the 2001 NolanInquiry into paedophile priests. Recommendations then included creatinga national child protection unit to promote good practice.

The cardinal said the review would look at whether the church has metits goal of "becoming an example of good practice in the prevention ofand response to child abuse".

He added: "Where it finds that the progress made has been inadequate, itwill recommend changes in current policy and mechanisms for implementingthose changes."
