The paper identifies the key principles on which a new policy will be based, including a focus on the individual pupil, school accountability and self-evaluation. It also highlights the important role of information about school performance in identifying problems and solutions and emphasises a link between school improvement and effective leadership. The paper includes a commitment to reward improvement, as well as a determination to deal more effectively with schools at risk of failing their pupils and the communities they serve.
The assembly government is hoping schools will take into account wider policy initiatives when trying to raise standards. The policy will also be supported by a revised Literacy and Numeracy Strategy.
