Selling Alcohol Responsibly: A Consultation on the New Code of Practice for Alcohol Retailers

Health
The Home Office is seeking views on a proposed mandatory code of practice for all alcohol retailers, which would ensure consistent good practice in the responsible selling of alcohol.

The code will aim to improve communities by giving local authorities more power to deal with irresponsible premises where reckless drinking might result in crime and antisocial behaviour.

Alcohol retailers will be required to display the alcoholic unit content of drinks, along with information on the health risks of alcohol. Cheap drink promotions that encourage people to consume alcohol quickly will be banned, and retail staff will have to follow a strict proof of age policy for those who look under 21. The proposed code underpins the government's strategies for tackling underage drinking, set out in its 2008 Youth Alcohol Action Plan.
