Opinion: Vox pop - Are retailers a scapegoat for teenage binge drinking?

Ministers are set to approve plans that would allow supermarkets to collude when setting alcohol prices. It is hoped that this will stop them from offering cheap deals and help reduce the rate of teenage drinking.

Retailers must stand up and take a share of the responsibility for the binge drinking of youngsters. Of course many others have a role, including parents, schools, police and local government, as well as wider society. But as long as retailers are promoting irresponsible offers, selling heavily discounted drinks, and serving both those underage and drunk, they are giving teenagers a loaded gun.

As a mother of four teenage boys, I understand the concerns surrounding the binge drinking culture among young people. But it is far too simplistic to blame price and retailers alone.
