Scotland: Young protest over youth service cuts

1 min read

The 250 young people aged 12 to 25, who call themselves the "Dumfries youth activists", have formed in response to the threat of cuts of up to 25 per cent (505,000) from the council's community learning and development service, which is responsible for youth work.

They warn that the proposed cut will devastate youth services in their area, which have already suffered from reduced resources and staffing levels.

One of the protesters is Steph McCulloch, 19, who has been using the area's services and volunteering within them for seven years. She said: "If it wasn't for the services in Dumfries, I think I would probably find myself in the teenage pregnancy and heroin addict statistics. Some of the staff are real role models."
