Youth work roundup: Volunteers, youth homelessness, and cuts protest

1 min read Youth Work
Council seeks volunteers to work with young people; three-year campaign to tackle youth homelessness launches; and protest held against cuts to youth services in Brighton, all the news this week.

A council is looking for volunteers to work with young people. The Maldon and Burnham Standard reports that Essex County Council wants help from the community to prevent re-offending by young people aged between 10 and 17. It wants to recruit people who can talk to young people, their parents and sometimes the victim of the offence to draw up a contract to address the young person's offending behaviour.

The first campaign of a new partnership between Yorkshire Building Society and a homelessness charity will take place next month. The Telegraph and Argus reports that the building society aims to raise £750,000 throughout the three-year partnership to support more than 700 homeless young people into rented accommodation.

Young people have held a protest about proposed cuts to the youth service in Brighton and Hove. Brighton and Hove News reports that those taking part want councillors to rethink proposals to cut £400,000 a year from the youth service budget. The money is currently spent on a contract with a consortium of local charities and community groups.

A planning application for a youth zone in Barking and Dagenham has been submitted to the council. The Barking and Dagenham Post reports that the £6m hub is designed to cater for eight- to 19-year-olds, offering 20 activities a night for 50p a session.
