Ask the Expert: Youth protests over cuts

1 min read Youth Work

Our service will be cut by more than half in the New Year. Many staff and activities will go.
Inspired by the protestors at St Paul’s, our young people are planning to stage a demonstration in our playground, camping overnight. I am worried that I will get into trouble by supporting this. Should I stop them?

Why? After all, if you believe that youth work is about encouraging participation and freedom of expression, then it is not for you to prevent young people expressing their feelings and getting their voices heard through peaceful protest.

However, question whether you need to be there yourself. In fact, I can imagine that the local authority would not support your inAvolvement. But that shouldn’t pose a problem as it would probably enable the young people to make their protest in the way they feel most appropriate, and probably all the more successfully for it.

Your role would be to advise them on what they can and can’t do, with a close eye on rights and responsibilities, and much attention to safety.
