Like most youth workers, I run sessions in different youth clubs. I have noticed that the reaction to the riots has been different from place to place. I feel strongly that there should be a consistent approach to moving on. One group has been nothing but "hyper" since, and has an aggressive and almost proud attitude to what was a terrible event.
I agree that the overall message that emerges in the wake of the riots needs to be consistent, structured and relevant. But whatever your standpoint, there has to be an acknowledgement that the episode proved to be empowering for many young people. Plus the sheer, unalloyed thrill-seeking was akin to that exhibited at a rave or football match. But let's be clear: the wanton destruction, greed and disregard for others was so shocking that there can be no excuses - even if explanations can be found.
