Ask the Expert: Helping young people to deal with bereavement

Two young people were killed in a hit and run before Christmas. As you can expect, the local young people are devastated. Some sit on the wall where the accident happened as they are convinced that they will spot the car involved. It is very frustrating as we cannot get them into the club. What should we do?

It sounds like these young people are traumatised and need some kind of closure. Many such accidents involving young people have been marked by some kind of memorial to the young person involved. Of course, there are differing views on this idea but it would not hurt to encourage the group to talk about it.

If the idea of a memorial does not appeal, then why not suggest making a video about the two young people, or a book of remembrance. Both could be exhibited in the youth centre, and used as part of a memorial service that the young people could write and present.
