Ask the Expert: How to deal with cyberbullying

1 min read Youth Work
We have a situation at my centre where young people have been using social networks to bully others in the group. It started as a joke but has escalated into a real conflict. Some of the young people are so upset that they've stopped coming to the centre. What should I do?

Whether it is over a social network or in the playground, most of the same rules for dealing with bullying apply. If you can discover who the bullies are, approach them directly and deal with it.

Sadly, anonymous bullying is harder to tackle. I suggest you get the whole centre together as soon as possible to debate the subject. Explain to everyone that the typical cyberbully is normally a very sad individual who probably has no or only a few friends and therefore takes out their anger and bitterness through bullying. Then let them know that bullying will not be tolerated in your youth centre. In other words, if anyone is going to stop coming, make sure it is the bully and not the victim.
