What a dilemma. It certainly is not good practice for young people to be let down in this way. If you have not already appealed to the better nature of the decision-makers in your organisation, then this has to be your first step.
You should consider asking the parents whether they would be able or prepared to contribute towards your travel costs. Also, contact the organisation you are visiting in Africa to see if they have any suggestions.
But you need to take the initiative. You might consider approaching organisations such as Global Exchange, the British Council or even Comic Relief.
