1 min read
Scotland could lose more than 300 nursery teachers under proposals by local authorities to replace them with nursery nurses.

The move comes as councils work out their 2006/07 budgets.

The Educational Institute of Scotland claims the proposals willdowngrade nursery provision and could affect more than 300 nurseryteachers in five local authorities.

The institute's education convener George MacBride said: "We must letnursery teachers continue to do the job they do so well. Nursery schoolsand classes with qualified teachers achieve higher levels of outcomes inall aspects of the curriculum."

Glasgow City Council is proposing to take 37 qualified nursery teachersfrom stand-alone nursery schools and replace them with nursery nurses, who are now called child development officers.

Nursery teachers and parents in Glasgow held a rally last week inprotest over the planned cuts, which are expected to save 370,000.
