SCOTLAND: Nurseries close as nurses take action

1 min read
There was no sign of a compromise as Scotland's nursery nurses started indefinite strike action on Monday (1 March).

Unison said it had not received any approach from CoSLA, the organisation representing Scottish local authority employers, to resolve their pay dispute. For its part, CoSLA said it maintained its position that pay should be negotiated at a local, not national, level.

Its president, Pat Watters, said he was "surprised and disappointed" by Unison's decision not to exempt children with special needs from the action, and thought parents would find the union's actions "unforgivable".

Eight of Scotland's 32 local authorities have now reached local settlements, East Renfrewshire and Falkirk being the latest.

It is estimated that 50,000 children will be affected by the strike by around 5,000 nursery workers.
