Seventy per cent of the 5,500 balloted by Unison returned their votes, and 81 per cent of them voted in support of action.
Nursery workers and their employers have been in dispute for more than two years over pay (News, 21-27 January).
Unison now has to give employers seven days' notice before it starts the strike.
However, the union hopes the result of the ballot will encourage CoSLA, the organisation representing Scottish local authorities, to come back to the negotiating table.
- Members of the Community and Youth Workers Union have voted for industrial action and will lobby employers in London next month.
