Scotland issues guidance on care

Social Care
The Scottish Government has issued guidance for police, council, voluntary and NHS workers on the care of Scotland's 14,000 looked-after children.

The guidance, These Are Our Bairns, outlines the legal duty on local authority departments and other agencies to co-operate with each other to promote the welfare of children in care.

It says local authorities should make sure their procedures are up to date and that looked-after young people are consulted.

A spokesman for the charity Children 1st said: "This guidance is certainly welcome. But we would stress that too many children still go into care because there isn't adequate support for struggling families. Alternatives must also be fully examined."
